All-Food Seasoning – A Must Have In Your Cabinet
Anyone who knows me well knows that I love cooking and I love eating. It’s amazing how many herbs and spices we have available to us to use in our meals. If you are anything like me though, you need to shorten the time it takes to make your meals.
I started thinking about how I use a few things consistently to season most dishes, so I wanted to save some time by combining those herbs and spices into one storage container. This can save up to 5 minutes per meal you cook. Over a month, that is a lot of time. I am all about saving time and using it to do something else you love!
Usually, most dishes require a little bit of salt and possibly a bit of pepper. My all food seasoning is simple and tastes delicious on everything!
Organic is the Way to Go
As someone who really works hard to put the best products in and around my home, and in and on my body, I purchase organic dried seasonings to make my all-food seasoning.
Spice Sterilization
To understand why organic spices matter in cooking, let’s review spice sterilization. In the U.S., we import approximately 60% of our spices and leaving only approximately 40% grown in the U.S. As a result, the government requires that all spices be sterilized. Spices must either be fumigated, irradiated or steamed.
Fumigation is the most common way to sterilize and is the least expensive option. Unfortunately, this process allows ethylene oxide gas to diffuse and permeate the spices leaving toxic chemicals behind. They then use aeration to allow the chemicals to dissipate some.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) allows several chemicals in the fumigation process that the World Health Organization has deemed as hazardous. As alarming as that is, they are also not required to label the products as having these chemicals as an ingredient.
Irradiation is used to prevent foodborne illness through sterilization, control insects, delay sprouting and ripening, and to extend the shelflife of foods. If someone has a tremendously compromised immune system, irradiated foods are recommended instead of what is normally given to the general public as they are also heavily processed.
In most cases, products that have been irradiated are required to be labeled as such, however, that does not apply to spices in the U.S.
The steaming process uses dry steam to kill any bacteria while maintaining maximum flavor. I can personally attest to the fact that organic herbs and spices are amazing in flavor compared to non-organic.
USDA Organic – What does that Mean?
According to Organic Valley, “USDA Organic is founded on federal law—the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990—makes the label significant and sets it apart from other labels like “natural,” non-GMO, or humane animal care. Organic has three layers of oversight. The Office of the Inspector General oversees the National Organic Program (NOP), the NOP oversees and audits the certifiers, and certifiers audit the organic farms and businesses. No other food labeling program has this many checks and balances.
Non-GMO and humane labels are based on standards developed by the certifying organization, and usually, they oversee themselves. They may not include third-party verification. That’s not to say these labels aren’t trustworthy—many are—but too many people assume they mean more than they do.
Non-GMO and natural can still mean pesticides were used. Humane could still mean animals ate GMO feed or were confined, as long as they aren’t treated badly. Do your research and know what those labels do and don’t cover. But you can trust that USDA Organic covers it all.”
When you are wondering why organic spices cost much more than non-organic, now you know that it’s worthwhile to invest the extra dollars to put a farm superior product into your body.
How I Store My All-food Seasonings?
Even though many of my organic seasonings come in glass storage containers, I do purchase USDA certified organic products in bulk air-tight bags as well. I prefer to put these into glass containers when I can and label them. Glass containers are great for the environment as they are reusable and decrease the amount of plastic footprint each of us leaves in this world. They are also washable!
You can purchase glass spice containers to store your loose spices and of course this delicious all-food seasoning recipe. These are great and a good size.
