Freeing up Your Hands
I am a food photographer and during my shooting, I have found that I really needed my hands free since I often work without an assistant. Food photographers are often looking to get that gorgeous shot of a fantastic cheese pull, a close-up look at the texture inside of a layered cake, or the juiciness of that delicious steak! To get those shots in focus and with that gorgeous perfect light we look for, we love to keep our ISO as low as possible. The solution is to free up your hands, mount your camera on a tripod and/or overhead c-stand, and pickup a wireless remote for your DSLR today! Life changing I tell you!
Determine the Model of Your Camera
There are different brands of wireless remotes available which can leave us feeling overwhelmed when looking for equipment. We just want to buy something once and it works perfectly, am I right? The most important thing is not to just guess or buy a remote that looks fancy. You must first determine the exact model of your camera. If you aren’t sure, look at your manual, your receipt for your camera, or look at your camera. The model is usually right on the front of your camera.
Where Should I Purchase My Remote
When deciding where to purchase your remote, you have a few choices which I find to be quite trustworthy. For the sake of equipping my readers with the skill set I have for researching and finding trustworthy companies to purchase from, I will let you in on a simple but effective method.
- Check the company’s return policy – You will want a 30 day period at least to determine if the item works and is as expected.
- Verify that the company doesn’t charge a restocking fee if you return – I do not purchase from companies that charge restocking fees
- Ensure you are not purchasing from sites that have very strangely low prices compared to other vendors. – It may be a scam website who sells knock off products or unsafe products. Can you say fire hazard?
- Buy from companies you’ve had a great experience with at least once.
- Purchase equipment from reputable companies that have been in business for 10 years or more. – I love small businesses and often support them, however, I am not one of the lucky ones who live close to a photo shop.
Amazon Remotes
I purchased my basic wireless remote for DSLRs for my Canon camera right on Amazon. While I often purchase equipment from some of my favorite camera companies like B & H Photo and Adorama, I chose to try this Amazon Basics Wireless Remote and it has worked fabulously for my needs. It does not have a zoom feature, it only works with time-delayed shutter release of 2 seconds, and it doesn’t allow you to do anything fancy as it just works as a wireless shutter release.
